The BG1400 was a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop exclusive — not a catalogued product, but a pickup that guitarists had been specifically requesting for thirty years. The name strongly suggests a Billy Gibbons connection — Gibbons being one of the great Telecaster players of his generation, and someone with a long relationship with Seymour Duncan. The Pearly Gates for Tele Lead brings that Custom Shop character into a catalogued product, making it accessible without a Custom Shop order. Second, the Stack design. A standard Telecaster bridge pickup is a single coil — it produces the bright, twangy, present tone that defines the Telecaster sound, but it also picks up electrical interference (the 60-cycle hum that is an inherent characteristic of single-coil pickups). A stacked humbucker places two coils vertically on top of each other — the second coil is wound out of phase with the first, which cancels the hum while leaving the signal from the strings intact.
