What age is a 1/4 violin suitable for?
A 1/4 violin is generally suitable for children aged approximately 5 to 7 years, particularly children in early primary school beginning their first formal violin lessons. The most reliable guide is arm length — a 1/4 violin suits children with an arm length of approximately 47 to 51cm (18.5 to 20 inches) measured from the base of the neck to the centre of the palm. How do I measure my child for the correct violin size?
Ask your child to stand straight with their left arm extended horizontally and relaxed. Measure from the base of the neck to the centre of the palm. An arm length of 47 to 51cm indicates a 1/4 size violin. Below 47cm may indicate a 1/8 size is more appropriate, while above 51cm may indicate a 1/2 size. Is this violin suitable for a complete beginner?
Absolutely. The Gliga III is one of the most highly recommended student violins at any size. How does the Gliga III compare to cheaper 1/4 size violins?
Budget violins at this size are almost universally made from laminated plywood. Plywood produces a thin, hollow tone that is genuinely more difficult to draw a musical sound from — which is discouraging for a young beginner and makes a teacher's job harder. The Gliga III uses solid spruce and maple which produces a warm, resonant tone that rewards the child's effort and makes early lessons more enjoyable and productive.

When should my child move up to a 1/2 violin?
Most students move from 1/4 to 1/2 when their arm length reaches approximately 51cm or above, usually around age 7 to 8. We also stock the Gliga III in 1/2, 3/4 and full size 4/4 — so as your child grows they can continue with the same trusted instrument family all the way through to full size.
