What age is a 1/2 violin suitable for?
A 1/2 violin is generally suitable for students aged approximately 7 to 10 years, or players with an arm length of 20 to 22 inches (approximately 50 to 55cm). Age is a guide only — arm length is the more reliable measurement as children develop at different rates. How do I measure my child for the correct violin size?
Ask your child to stand straight with their left arm extended horizontally and relaxed. Measure from the base of the neck to the centre of the palm. An arm length of 20 to 22 inches indicates a 1/2 size violin. Below 20 inches may indicate a 1/4 size is more appropriate, while above 22 inches may indicate they are ready for a 3/4. Is this violin suitable for a complete beginner?
Absolutely. The Gliga III is one of the most highly recommended student violins at any size. How does the Gliga III compare to cheaper 1/2 size violins?
Budget violins at fractional sizes are almost always made from laminated plywood. Plywood produces a thin, hollow tone that is actually more difficult to draw a good sound from — which is discouraging for a young beginner. The Gliga III uses solid spruce and maple which resonates naturally and rewards the student's effort with a genuinely musical sound.

When should my child move up to a 3/4 violin?
Most students move from 1/2 to 3/4 when their arm length reaches approximately 22 inches, usually around age 9 to 11. We also stock the Gliga III in 3/4 and full size 4/4 — so as your child grows they can continue with the same trusted instrument family. Contact us for advice on timing the transition.

Can I try this violin in person before purchasing?
