Gliga III Violin Outfit - 1/2 Size Handcrafted Quality & Expert Setup
The Gliga III 1/2 brings the same exceptional handcrafted quality as the full size model to younger players who are not yet ready for a full size instrument. Handcrafted in Romania from solid tonewoods, including a solid spruce top and solid maple back, neck, and sides with a light flame, this violin far exceeds the quality of standard mass-produced instruments at this size. Finished with a traditional hand-applied oil antique varnish and following the iconic Stradivari pattern, the Gliga III 1/2 gives young players a genuine instrument to grow with — not a toy that limits their development.
Angkor Music Workshop Setup
The quality of setup on a small violin matters just as much as on a full size instrument — perhaps more so, because young players have less physical strength to compensate for a poorly adjusted instrument. Every Gliga III 1/2 at Angkor Music undergoes an expert workshop setup before it reaches you. This includes fitting a premium French Aubert bridge, precisely adjusting the Ebony Swiss-style pegs for smooth tuning, and installing an authentic Wittner tailpiece with built-in fine tuners. The result is an instrument that responds easily to a young bow arm and stays in tune through an entire lesson.
Reliable Craftsmanship & Authentic Materials
Unlike many small student violins which cut corners on materials at fractional sizes, the Gliga III 1/2 maintains the same quality standards as the full size model.
- Solid European Tonewoods: Carved from solid spruce and maple — not plywood — to ensure a rich, natural acoustic tone that genuinely rewards the young player's effort.
- Genuine Ebony Fittings: Features a real Ebony fingerboard, chinrest, and pegs for long-lasting durability and a professional feel under small fingers.
- Inlaid Purfling: The purfling is meticulously inlaid by hand, not painted, to protect the instrument and enhance its aesthetic.
- Stradivari Pattern: Built to the proportions of the world's most famous violin design, scaled accurately to 1/2 size for correct playability.
Complete Student Outfit
This violin is supplied as a complete outfit, providing everything needed to start playing immediately.
- FPS Brazilwood Bow: A reliable student bow correctly sized for 1/2 violin, featuring a genuine ebony frog and natural horsehair for a consistent response.
- Shaped Violin Case: A lightweight, protective 1/2 size case designed for easy transport to lessons and school.
- Opal Strings: Selected for their clear and bright response, perfect for helping new players hear their intonation clearly.

Expert Advice at Angkor Music
At Angkor Music Melbourne, we work with parents, students and violin teachers to find the right instrument and the right size for every young player. Getting the size right at this age is especially important — a violin that is too large will cause tension in the shoulder and arm that creates poor technique and can discourage a child from continuing. Our team is happy to advise on sizing before you purchase. You are welcome to visit our Altona showroom and try instruments in person.

Frequently Asked Questions
What age is a 1/2 violin suitable for?
A 1/2 violin is generally suitable for students aged approximately 7 to 10 years, or players with an arm length of 20 to 22 inches (approximately 50 to 55cm). Age is a guide only — arm length is the more reliable measurement as children develop at different rates. Contact us before purchasing if you are unsure and we will help you determine the correct size.
How do I measure my child for the correct violin size?
Ask your child to stand straight with their left arm extended horizontally and relaxed. Measure from the base of the neck to the centre of the palm. An arm length of 20 to 22 inches indicates a 1/2 size violin. Below 20 inches may indicate a 1/4 size is more appropriate, while above 22 inches may indicate they are ready for a 3/4. We are always happy to advise — contact us before purchasing.
Is this violin suitable for a complete beginner?
Absolutely. The Gliga III is one of the most highly recommended student violins at any size. Its solid wood construction, genuine ebony fittings and expert workshop setup make it significantly more playable and rewarding than the budget plywood instruments commonly found at this price point. For a primary school student beginning violin lessons this is an excellent starting instrument.
What is included in the outfit?
The outfit includes the handcrafted Gliga III 1/2 violin with expert workshop setup, an FPS Brazilwood 1/2 bow with genuine ebony frog and horsehair, a shaped protective 1/2 case and Opal strings already installed.
Why is the workshop setup important for a small student violin?
Young players have limited physical strength — a poorly set up instrument that is hard to bow or difficult to keep in tune will discourage a child very quickly. Our expert workshop setup at Angkor Music ensures the bridge is correctly fitted, the pegs turn smoothly and the Wittner tailpiece keeps the strings in tune with minimal adjustment.
How does the Gliga III compare to cheaper 1/2 size violins?
Budget violins at fractional sizes are almost always made from laminated plywood. Plywood produces a thin, hollow tone that is actually more difficult to draw a good sound from — which is discouraging for a young beginner. The Gliga III uses solid spruce and maple which resonates naturally and rewards the student's effort with a genuinely musical sound.
When should my child move up to a 3/4 violin?
Most students move from 1/2 to 3/4 when their arm length reaches approximately 22 inches, usually around age 9 to 11. We also stock the Gliga III in 3/4 and full size 4/4 — so as your child grows they can continue with the same trusted instrument family. Contact us for advice on timing the transition.
Can I try this violin in person before purchasing?
Yes. You are welcome to visit our Altona Melbourne showroom. For young students especially, trying the instrument in person is highly recommended — we can check sizing and make sure you are completely confident before purchasing.
