Vandoren Traditional Alto Saxophone Reeds – Strength 1.0 (Box of 10)
The Vandoren Traditional (Strength 1.0) is specifically engineered for maximum ease of play. Known globally as the "Blue Box," these reeds are celebrated for their pure sound and instant response. Featuring the thinnest tip in the Vandoren range, the 1.0 strength is designed to vibrate with minimal air pressure, allowing even the youngest players to achieve a pianissimo attack and a clear, stable tone across all registers.
The Angkor Music Educator’s Review
At Angkor Music Melbourne, we often see beginners struggle with a sound that is "airy" or "hissy"—this is usually because the reed is too hard for their developing embouchure. The Vandoren 1.0 is the solution. By reducing the physical resistance, it allows students to focus on their fingerings and breath control rather than fighting the instrument. This "soft" strength is also a favorite for jazz players using mouthpieces with very small tip openings who want a vintage, free-blowing feel. As with all Vandoren products, the Flow-Pack sealing is vital for the Australian climate, ensuring that every reed in the box is perfectly preserved until you are ready to play.
Precision Engineering for Pure Tone
1. High-Sensitivity Tip
The tip is the area of maximum vibration. By keeping this area extremely thin, Vandoren allows for instant speech from the instrument, making staccato passages and low-note entries effortless.
2. Reinforced Vertebral Column
While the tip is light, the "vertebral column" features a gradual increase in cane toward the heel. This provides the structural body needed to keep the tone warm and prevent it from "collapsing" during louder passages.
3. Superior Flexibility
Vandoren Traditionals are famous for their ability to handle large intervals. This flexibility allows for smooth legato transitions while maintaining clarity and richness in the sound.
4. Guaranteed Freshness
Every reed is individually sealed in a Flow-Pack. This maintains the optimal humidity level, preventing the cane from becoming brittle or warping while in transit or on the shelf.
Pro Setup Tip
Strength 1.0 reeds are very delicate. When mounting the reed, be careful not to touch the very tip with your thumb, as it can chip easily. If you find you are "overblowing" this reed or the sound is becoming too bright, it may be time to move up to a 1.5 strength—available right here at our Altona store.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is strength 1.0 too soft for an adult beginner?
Not necessarily. While most adults start on a 1.5 or 2.0, the 1.0 is excellent if you are finding it difficult to produce any sound at all, or if you are using a mouthpiece with a very wide tip opening.
How long will a box of 10 reeds last?
For a beginner playing daily, a box of 10 should last 2 to 3 months, provided the reeds are rotated and stored correctly in a reed guard after use.
What is the 'vertebral column' in a reed?
It refers to the thickness of the cane along the center of the reed. A "solid vertebral column" ensures that even though the tip is thin and easy to play, the reed has enough heart to produce a rich, full sound.
