Seymour Duncan Slash 2.0 — Complete Les Paul Tonal Solution Kit

The Seymour Duncan Slash 2.0 Complete Les Paul Tonal Solution Kit combines Slash's refined signature humbucker set with a complete quality wiring upgrade — long shaft CTS 500K pots, Switchcraft 3-way toggle, Sprague Orange Drop capacitors, Switchcraft output jack, deep thread extension nut and vintage cloth wire. This is a complete signal chain upgrade that allows the Slash 2.0 pickups to perform exactly as designed. One purchase covers everything needed to transform the tone of any Les Paul-style guitar.

Angkor Music — Why the Complete Kit Matters

Installing premium pickups into a Les Paul with worn or low-quality original electronics limits the upgrade significantly. Original pots lose their value and smooth taper over time. Generic capacitors colour the tone in ways that mask what quality pickups can do. A failing output jack introduces noise into the signal. This kit replaces every component in the signal chain — not just the pickups — ensuring the Slash 2.0 set performs to its full potential. The deep thread extension nut included in this kit is a detail most players never know they need until they discover their new toggle switch will not seat correctly in their carved maple top. We have included it here because we have seen that problem too many times.

The Slash 2.0 Pickups — Refined Signature Tone

The Seymour Duncan Slash 2.0 set is the evolved version of one of the most iconic signature pickup sets in rock — refined through years of collaboration between Seymour Duncan and Slash to deliver a more balanced, more articulate and more dynamically responsive set than its predecessor.

Slash's tone is one of the most recognisable in rock history — warm, singing, harmonically rich, with a smooth top end that never becomes harsh and a midrange that sits perfectly in a band mix. The foundation of that sound is his relationship with vintage PAF-style humbuckers and Alnico II magnets, which produce a warmer, more compressed and more musical response than the brighter Alnico V magnets found in higher output sets.

Alnico II Magnets — The Vintage Character

The choice of Alnico II magnets is the most significant tonal decision in the Slash 2.0's design. Alnico II produces a softer, warmer magnetic field than Alnico V or ceramic magnets — the result is a pickup with a sweeter top end, a more compressed and musical response, and a natural harmonic bloom that higher output magnets do not produce. String attack feels slightly softer under Alnico II, which is precisely why blues and classic rock players favour it — the playing experience invites expression rather than demanding precision.

The Slash 2.0 set uses Alnico II across both neck and bridge pickups, with each voiced for its position while maintaining tonal coherence across the set. The result is a matched pair that sounds like it belongs together — consistent character across both pickups with appropriate output and voicing for each position.

Bridge Pickup

The bridge pickup is voiced for articulate low end, rich harmonics and a cutting midrange that sits in a band mix without being strident. Under high gain the bridge delivers the singing, sustaining lead tone that defines Slash's most recognisable work — responsive to picking dynamics, expressive under bend and vibrato, and harmonically complex in ways that lower quality pickups simply cannot replicate.

Neck Pickup

The neck pickup is warm, full and vocal — a smooth, singing tone with excellent note separation that avoids the muddiness that poorly designed neck humbuckers produce. Clean chord work sounds rich and open. Lead playing on the neck produces a tone with long sustain, natural compression and a smooth, even harmonic bloom across the full range of the neck.

Raw Nickel Covers

The raw nickel covers are both a visual and a tonal choice. Nickel covers add a slight softening effect to the top end compared to uncovered pickups — a subtle warmth that complements the Alnico II's natural character. The raw finish ages with the guitar, developing a warm patina over time that suits the vintage aesthetic of a Les Paul perfectly.

Hand Built in the USA

The Slash 2.0 set is hand-built in Seymour Duncan's Santa Barbara, California facility — wound and assembled by experienced technicians using the same processes and quality standards applied to every Seymour Duncan pickup. This is not mass-produced offshore manufacture — it is American handcraft applied to a precision component.

The Complete Wiring Kit — Every Component Specified

Important — Compatibility Notice: This kit uses long shaft CTS potentiometers and a long shaft Switchcraft toggle switch designed for genuine Gibson Les Paul and other quality USA-made dual-humbucker guitars. These components may not fit Epiphone, Epiphone-style or Les Paul copy guitars without modification due to thinner body construction and different top curvature. If you own an Epiphone or Les Paul copy, please contact us before purchasing — we stock a separate wiring kit designed for those instruments.

4x Long Shaft CTS 500K Precision Audio Taper Potentiometers — EP0689

CTS potentiometers are the industry standard in quality guitar wiring — used in Gibson USA instruments and specified by luthiers worldwide. The long shaft is essential for genuine Gibson Les Paul guitars where the carved maple top requires additional pot shaft length for correct seating and nut engagement. Audio taper provides a smooth, natural-feeling volume and tone sweep. At 500K these are the correct value for the Slash 2.0 humbuckers — preserving the full high-end clarity and dynamic range of the Alnico II pickups.

1x Switchcraft 3-Way Toggle Switch — EP-4367-000

The Switchcraft 3-way toggle is the definitive Les Paul switching component — reliable, consistent and significantly more durable than the generic switches found in most production guitars. This is the long shaft version for Gibson-style guitars, with both cream and black switch tips included so the correct tip can be selected to match the guitar's hardware and pickguard.

1x Deep Thread Extension Nut — EP-4923-001

This is the component that most players never think about until they discover the problem. Gibson Les Pauls have a carved maple top — the carve creates a raised dome at the centre of the body that adds thickness at the point where the toggle switch is mounted. A standard toggle switch nut does not have sufficient thread depth to seat correctly through this additional thickness. The deep thread extension nut provides the extra thread length required for correct installation. Its inclusion in this kit reflects real workshop experience — this is a problem we have seen and this kit is designed to prevent it.

1x Switchcraft Output Jack — EP-0055-000

The Switchcraft output jack is the standard of quality in guitar output connections — reliable, consistent and significantly more durable than generic alternatives. Output jack failure is one of the most common and avoidable guitar faults. A correctly installed Switchcraft jack will outlast the guitar.

2x Sprague Orange Drop Capacitors — .022uF EP-4382-000

Two Orange Drop capacitors are included — one for each tone pot in the Les Paul's four-control wiring. The Orange Drop is the capacitor of choice for professional luthiers and guitar technicians worldwide. At .022uF these are the correct value for humbucker-equipped guitars, producing a warm, musical tone roll-off when the tone control is backed off. Two caps are required because a Les Paul uses a separate tone control — and therefore a separate capacitor — for each pickup.

Vintage Cloth Wire — 5ft Single Conductor 22AWG with Braided Shield — GW-0837-000

Five feet of 22AWG single conductor vintage cloth-covered wire with braided shield — the correct specification for professional guitar wiring. The braided shield provides additional noise rejection compared to unshielded wire. Vintage cloth covering provides better flexibility and easier handling than modern plastic insulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Alnico II different from Alnico V in a humbucker?
Alnico II produces a softer, warmer magnetic field than Alnico V. The practical result is a pickup with a sweeter top end, more natural compression and a harmonic bloom that feels musical and expressive rather than aggressive. Alnico V pickups like the JB are brighter, more aggressive and higher in perceived output — ideal for heavier rock and metal. Alnico II pickups like the Slash 2.0 are warmer, smoother and more dynamic — ideal for classic rock, blues and expressive lead playing. The choice between them is not about quality but about tonal character and musical context.

Will this kit fit my Gibson Les Paul Standard?
Yes. This kit is designed specifically for Gibson Les Paul Standard and other USA-made Gibson Les Paul models. The long shaft CTS pots and long shaft Switchcraft toggle are the correct components for the Gibson Les Paul's carved maple top construction. The deep thread extension nut ensures correct toggle switch seating in the carved top.

Will this kit fit my Epiphone Les Paul?
The long shaft pots and toggle switch in this kit are designed for Gibson USA construction and may not fit Epiphone or Les Paul copy guitars without modification. Epiphone guitars generally use a thinner body construction that requires shorter shaft pots. Please contact us before purchasing — we stock a separate wiring kit designed for Epiphone and Les Paul copy instruments.

Why does a Les Paul need two capacitors when most guitars only need one?
A Les Paul has four controls — two volume pots and two tone pots. Each tone pot requires its own capacitor to function correctly. In a Strat or Tele with a single tone control, one capacitor is sufficient. In a Les Paul's independent-per-pickup wiring layout, two capacitors are required — one for the neck tone and one for the bridge tone. This kit includes both.

What is the deep thread extension nut and do I really need it?
Gibson Les Paul guitars have a carved maple top — a dome-shaped arch at the centre of the body. This carve adds thickness at the toggle switch mounting point. A standard toggle switch nut does not have enough thread to engage correctly through this added thickness, leaving the switch loose or incorrectly seated. The deep thread extension nut provides the additional thread length needed for correct installation on a carved top guitar. If your guitar has a flat top this component may not be necessary — but it does no harm to include it and is significantly easier to have in the kit than to source separately when you discover you need it.

Can I have this kit professionally installed by Angkor Music?
Yes. Our workshop team can install this complete kit in your guitar. Drop your guitar into our Altona workshop at 4 Drake Boulevard or use our mail-in guitar service. Full details at angkormusic.com.au/guitar-repairs. We set up and test the guitar fully before return.

Is this the same pickup set Slash uses?
The Slash 2.0 set is Slash's official signature Seymour Duncan pickup — designed in collaboration with Slash to deliver the tonal character he pursues. Slash's live and studio tone is the product of his complete signal chain — specific guitars, amplifiers, effects and playing technique built over decades. The Slash 2.0 set delivers the pickup foundation of that tone in a format available to any player. The quality, voicing and tonal character are genuine — the exact result in any given guitar depends on the instrument, amplifier and player.
