Seymour Duncan JB Trembucker / Jazz — Complete Floyd Rose HH Coil Split Kit

The Seymour Duncan JB Trembucker / Jazz Complete Floyd Rose Coil Split Kit is the complete tonal solution for Ibanez, Schecter, ESP and any other HH guitar fitted with a Floyd Rose or double-locking tremolo system. It combines the TB-4 JB Trembucker — the wider-spaced Floyd Rose version of the world's most popular humbucker — with the SH-2 Jazz neck pickup, a push-pull coil split wiring harness and your choice of switching format. Everything in the signal chain is upgraded. Nothing is left to the original electronics.

Angkor Music — The Most Common Floyd Rose Upgrade Mistake

The most common mistake players make when upgrading pickups in a Floyd Rose guitar is purchasing a standard SH-4 JB rather than the TB-4 JB Trembucker. The string spacing on a Floyd Rose bridge is wider than a fixed bridge or vintage tremolo — approximately 2.07 inches compared to 1.90 inches on a standard humbucker. Install a standard-spaced humbucker in a Floyd Rose bridge position and the outer strings — particularly the high E — sit outside or between the pole pieces rather than directly over them. The result is reduced output, tonal imbalance and a noticeably thinner, weaker high E string. The TB-4 Trembucker is the JB built for Floyd Rose. Same pickup. Same tone. Correct spacing. This kit uses the right parts.

Why Trembucker Spacing Matters — The Technical Explanation

All Seymour Duncan humbuckers are available in two string spacing formats. The standard series — designated SH — is built to 1.90 inch pole spacing, correct for fixed bridges, wraparound bridges and vintage-style tremolos. The Trembucker series — designated TB — is built to 2.07 inch pole spacing, correct for Floyd Rose double-locking tremolos, Ibanez Edge and Lo-Pro Edge bridges, Kahler bridges and similar wide-spacing systems.

The pole spacing of a pickup must match the string spacing of the bridge for optimal performance. When the strings pass directly over the centre of each pole piece the magnetic field captures the full vibration of the string. When the outer strings sit off-centre from the pole pieces — as they do when a standard-spaced humbucker is fitted to a Floyd Rose — the pickup captures less of their vibration. The practical result is a bridge pickup that sounds strong and balanced on the middle strings but thin and weak on the high E, with uneven dynamics across all six strings.

This is not a subtle difference. It is immediately audible. And it is entirely avoidable by using the correct Trembucker format in the bridge position.

The Pickups — JB Trembucker Bridge / Jazz Neck

TB-4 JB Trembucker — Bridge

The JB humbucker is the best-selling aftermarket pickup in the world — used across every genre from blues to metal and found in the bridge position of more guitars than any other aftermarket humbucker. Its character is immediately recognisable: aggressive, articulate and harmonically complex with a midrange peak that cuts through any mix and a top end that allows pick attack and harmonic detail to come through clearly even under heavy distortion.

For the lead player the JB's harmonic content makes pinch harmonics and natural harmonics accessible and expressive — the pickup actively encourages aggressive technique. For rhythm playing the low end is tight and defined rather than loose, making palm-muted riffing clear and punchy. The TB-4 is the JB in every sonic respect — identical wind, identical magnets, identical character — built at Floyd Rose string spacing.

  • Output: Hot — suited to hard rock, metal, heavy blues and high gain playing
  • Character: Aggressive, articulate, cutting midrange, harmonically complex
  • Magnets: Alnico V
  • DC Resistance: 16.4K
  • Conductors: 4-conductor plus shield — coil split ready
  • Spacing: 2.07 inch — correct for Floyd Rose and wide-spacing bridges

SH-2 Jazz — Neck

The Jazz humbucker is the most widely used neck pickup in the Seymour Duncan range and the natural complement to the JB bridge. Where the JB is hot and aggressive, the Jazz is smooth, warm and musical — a full, open neck tone with excellent note separation and a natural, singing quality that suits clean playing, melodic lead work and the warm rhythm tones that make a neck pickup worth using in the first place.

The Jazz is standard spacing at the neck position — the string spacing at the neck of virtually all guitars is narrow enough that standard spacing is correct regardless of the bridge format. The SH-2 Jazz is 4-conductor, enabling full coil-split functionality through the push-pull volume control.

  • Output: Medium — balanced, smooth, musical
  • Character: Warm, full, excellent note separation, singing lead tone
  • Magnets: Alnico V
  • DC Resistance: 7.7K
  • Conductors: 4-conductor plus shield — coil split ready
  • Spacing: Standard 1.90 inch — correct for neck position on all guitars

Coil Split Wiring — One Push-Pull, Full Tonal Range

Both the TB-4 and SH-2 Jazz use 4-conductor lead wire — which means both pickups can be coil split. This kit wires the coil split to the push-pull volume pot. Pull the volume knob up and both pickups split simultaneously to single-coil mode. Push down and both return to full humbucker operation. The 3-way toggle switch handles all pickup selection — bridge, both, neck — independently of the coil split function.

This gives the guitar four distinct tonal configurations:

Full humbucker — bridge Hot, aggressive, full JB character
Full humbucker — both Full, thick parallel tone
Full humbucker — neck Warm, smooth Jazz neck tone
Split coil — bridge Single-coil clarity from the JB
Split coil — both Strat-like parallel single-coil tone
Split coil — neck Single-coil Jazz neck — glassy and clear

Choose Your Switch Format — Same Kit, Same Price

Different HH guitars use different switching formats. This kit is available with either switching option at the same price — specify your preference when ordering.

Option A — CRL 3-Way Blade Switch

Standard on Ibanez RG, S-series and most superstrat format guitars. The lever-style blade sits in a slot in the guitar's top and flicks between positions. Specify this option if your guitar currently has a lever/blade style switch.

Option B — Switchcraft 3-Way Toggle

Standard on Schecter, many ESP/LTD models and Les Paul format HH guitars. The toggle switch protrudes through the top with a tip cap. Specify this option if your guitar currently has a toggle-style switch.

Not sure which switch your guitar uses? Contact us before ordering and our team will confirm the correct option for your specific guitar.

Compatible Guitars

This kit is designed for any HH guitar fitted with a Floyd Rose or wide-spacing double-locking tremolo system, including:

  • Ibanez RG series with Edge, Lo-Pro Edge, Edge Zero or similar Floyd-style bridges
  • Ibanez S series with ZR or Edge tremolo
  • Schecter C-series, Hellraiser, Banshee and other Schecter HH models with Floyd Rose
  • ESP and LTD HH models with Floyd Rose or LFR
  • Jackson Soloist, Dinky and other Jackson HH models with Floyd Rose
  • Any HH guitar with a Floyd Rose original, Floyd Rose Special or licensed Floyd Rose copy

Before ordering: Confirm your bridge has Floyd Rose or wide-spacing string spacing before specifying the TB-4 Trembucker. If your guitar has a fixed bridge, wraparound bridge or vintage-style tremolo, you need a standard SH-4 JB rather than the TB-4 Trembucker. Contact us if you are unsure — we are happy to confirm the correct specification for your guitar before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the JB (SH-4) and the JB Trembucker (TB-4)?
The SH-4 JB and TB-4 JB Trembucker are tonally identical — same wind, same magnets, same character. The only difference is string spacing. The SH-4 is built to 1.90 inch spacing for fixed bridges and vintage tremolos. The TB-4 is built to 2.07 inch spacing for Floyd Rose and other wide-spacing double-locking systems. Installing a standard SH-4 in a Floyd Rose bridge position produces uneven output across the strings, with the high E sitting off the pole pieces and sounding thin and weak. The TB-4 corrects this.

How does the coil split work in this kit?
The coil split is wired to the push-pull volume pot. In the down position the guitar operates in full humbucker mode — both pickups as standard humbuckers. Pull the volume knob up and both pickups split simultaneously to single-coil operation. The 3-way toggle switch selects pickups independently of the coil split — so you can use bridge, both or neck in either humbucker or split mode.

Which switch do I need — blade or toggle?
If your guitar has a lever-style switch that sits in a slot in the top and flicks sideways — like most Ibanez RG and S-series guitars — specify the CRL 3-way blade switch. If your guitar has a toggle switch that protrudes through the top with a tip — like most Schecter, ESP and Gibson-format HH guitars — specify the Switchcraft 3-way toggle. If you are unsure contact us before ordering.

Will this kit fit my Ibanez RG?
Yes — the TB-4 Trembucker is the correct bridge pickup for Ibanez RG guitars with Edge, Lo-Pro Edge or Edge Zero bridges. Specify the CRL blade switch option for standard Ibanez RG switching. If your RG has a fixed bridge rather than a Floyd-style tremolo, contact us — you would need the standard SH-4 JB rather than the TB-4 Trembucker.

Will this kit fit my Schecter with Floyd Rose?
Yes — specify the Switchcraft toggle switch option for Schecter guitars. The TB-4 Trembucker is the correct bridge specification for any Schecter with a Floyd Rose or Floyd Rose-licensed tremolo. The Switchcraft 3-way toggle matches the switching format used on Schecter C-series, Hellraiser and Banshee models.

Does coil splitting a humbucker produce true single-coil tone?
Coil splitting a 4-conductor humbucker deactivates one of the two coils, producing a single-coil-like output. The result is brighter, thinner and more single-coil in character than the full humbucker — useful for clean tones and lighter gain settings. It is not identical to a purpose-built single-coil pickup in tone or output level, but it provides a genuinely useful additional tonal option without requiring additional pickups or routing. For maximum tonal range at high gain the full humbucker setting is more appropriate.

Can I have this kit professionally installed by Angkor Music?
Yes. Drop your guitar into our Altona workshop at 4 Drake Boulevard or use our mail-in guitar service. Full details at angkormusic.com.au/guitar-repairs. We set up and test the guitar fully before return.
