Gotoh Bridge and Tailpiece Upgrade Kit Chrome — Epiphone and Metric Import Guitars

The Gotoh GE103B-T and GE101Z upgrade kit is the definitive bridge and tailpiece upgrade for Epiphone and other metric import guitars. Combining the Gotoh GE103B-T traditional tune-o-matic bridge with the GE101Z stop tailpiece — both with M8 metric thread studs that screw directly into the existing body bushings on most Epiphone and import guitars — this is a direct drop-in upgrade that requires no modification, no redrilling and no body work. One of the most effective and cost-efficient upgrades available for an Epiphone guitar.

Angkor Music — The First Upgrade We Recommend for Epiphone Guitars

The bridge and tailpiece on a budget import guitar is almost always the weakest link in the hardware chain. The pot-metal or low-grade zinc components used on entry level Epiphone and import guitars produce less sustain, less precise intonation and less consistent tuning stability than quality hardware. Upgrading to Gotoh hardware is one of the most noticeable and cost-effective improvements you can make to an Epiphone — immediately improving sustain, intonation accuracy and tuning stability without any permanent modification to the instrument. We install this kit regularly in our  workshop and the improvement is consistently noticeable.

Why Upgrade Your Epiphone Bridge and Tailpiece?

Epiphone guitars represent excellent value at their price points — but the bridge and tailpiece hardware on production import guitars is typically manufactured to a cost target rather than a quality target. The practical consequences for the player are:

  • Reduced sustain: Lower density pot-metal hardware transfers less string vibration energy into the body, producing shorter sustain and a thinner open tone compared to quality hardened zinc or steel hardware.
  • Imprecise intonation: Saddles that are not hardened or precisely formed produce inconsistent intonation — the guitar plays in tune at the open position but becomes progressively sharper or flatter as you move up the neck.
  • Tuning instability: Cheap bridge and tailpiece studs that are not precisely fitted to their body anchors allow micro-movement under string tension — contributing to tuning drift during and after playing.
  • Worn saddles: Soft pot-metal saddles develop string wear grooves faster than hardened alternatives, eventually causing string breakage at the contact point and further intonation inconsistency.

The Gotoh GE103B-T bridge addresses all of these issues with hardened pre-notched zinc saddles, precise manufacturing tolerances and quality hardware construction. The GE101Z tailpiece adds a correctly specified stop tailpiece that seats firmly and consistently in its anchors.

Metric Compatibility — The Critical Detail

This is the most important compatibility consideration when purchasing a bridge upgrade for an Epiphone or import guitar. There are two stud thread standards used in guitar hardware:

Standard Thread Typical Guitars
Metric M8 (8mm) Epiphone, most Asian import guitars, many Korean and Chinese made instruments
USA / Imperial Nashville or ABR-1 spec Gibson USA, American made guitars, some higher-end Epiphone models

Installing a USA-spec bridge into metric body anchors — or vice versa — will not work. The threads do not match. This Gotoh kit uses M8 metric thread studs that screw directly into the existing metric body bushings on standard Epiphone and import guitars. No modification required.

Important: This kit is designed for metric import guitars using M8 thread body bushings — standard on most Epiphone and Asian import instruments. It is not suitable for Gibson USA guitars or guitars with USA Nashville or ABR-1 spec body anchors. If you are unsure which specification your guitar uses, contact us before ordering and our team will confirm compatibility.

Gotoh GE103B-T Tune-o-Matic Bridge

The GE103B-T is a traditional style tune-o-matic bridge built to Gotoh's quality standards — precise, durable and correctly specified for metric import guitars. Key features:

  • Hardened pre-notched zinc saddles: String slots are pre-cut to guide strings correctly and prevent binding — harder than standard saddles and more resistant to wear from string contact.
  • 14mm bridge width: Wider than standard tune-o-matic designs — providing greater intonation adjustment range for accurate intonation across all six strings.
  • 52mm string spacing: Correct string spacing for standard Epiphone and import guitar neck widths.
  • 74mm post spacing: Matches the standard metric post spacing on Epiphone and import guitar bodies.
  • 12-inch saddle radius: Matches the fingerboard radius of most Epiphone and import guitars for consistent string height across all strings.
  • 6.5mm mounting post holes: Correct specification for standard metric body bushings.

Gotoh GE101Z Stop Tailpiece

The GE101Z is a traditional style stop tailpiece — the correct complement to the GE103B-T bridge. Diecast zinc construction provides the density and consistency needed for reliable string anchoring and good sustain. M8 metric thread studs seat correctly into standard metric body anchors without play or movement under string tension.

Professional Installation Available

Bridge and tailpiece installation on an Epiphone or import guitar requires correct string height setup, intonation adjustment and saddle radius matching. Our workshop team at Angkor Music installs this kit regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit my Epiphone Les Paul?
This kit is designed for standard Epiphone guitars using M8 metric thread body bushings — which covers the majority of Epiphone Les Paul, SG, ES and other models. It is a direct drop-in replacement requiring no modification. Note that some higher-end Epiphone models have adopted USA specification hardware — if you are unsure about your specific model contact us before ordering.

What is the difference between metric and USA Nashville bridge specifications?
Metric bridges use M8 thread studs that fit metric body bushings — the standard on Epiphone and most Asian import guitars. USA Nashville bridges use a different stud thread specification that fits Nashville-style body anchors found on Gibson USA and some higher-end instruments. The two formats are not interchangeable. Installing the wrong spec bridge will not work — the threads will not engage with the body bushings. This kit is metric spec and fits standard Epiphone and import guitars.

Will upgrading my bridge and tailpiece make a noticeable difference?
Yes — and it is one of the most cost-effective upgrades available for an Epiphone guitar. The bridge and tailpiece on production import guitars are typically manufactured to a price target rather than a quality target. Upgrading to Gotoh hardware produces noticeably improved sustain, more accurate intonation and better tuning stability. We install this kit regularly in our workshop and the improvement is consistently apparent.

Why does the bridge have pre-notched saddles?
Pre-notched saddles have the string slots already cut to guide each string correctly and prevent binding at the saddle contact point. Binding at the bridge saddle is a common cause of tuning instability — when a string binds in a poorly cut or unlubricated saddle slot it does not return to pitch correctly after bending or tremolo use. Pre-notched hardened saddles address this from the factory.

Does this kit include everything needed for installation?
Yes. The kit includes the GE103B-T bridge, GE101Z stop tailpiece, mounting studs and body anchors for both components. Everything needed for a complete installation is included.

Can Angkor Music install this for me?
Yes. We install this kit regularly in our Altona workshop.
