The Casio Scaled Hammer Action II replicates the characteristic of an acoustic piano where lower notes are heavier and higher notes are lighter — the natural result of longer, heavier hammer mechanisms in the bass register of a grand piano. Keys in the lower octaves respond to firm touch with appropriate weight. Keys in the upper register are lighter and more responsive to gentle playing. This graduated weighting is what develops the correct finger strength, control and touch sensitivity that piano teachers require from the earliest lessons.

The keys also feature simulated ebony and ivory texturing — a tactile surface finish that replicates the feel of traditional piano keys under the fingers, reducing slip during extended playing sessions.

Is the CDP-S360 Suitable for AMEB Examinations?

Yes — with the addition of the optional SP-34 tri-pedal unit. The Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) requires that digital pianos used in examinations have three functional pedals — sustain, sostenuto and soft — matching the pedal layout of a traditional acoustic piano. The CDP-S360 includes the SP-3 single sustain pedal as standard, which is sufficient for practice and early grade examinations.

For Grade 3 and above where sostenuto and soft pedal technique becomes part of the examined repertoire, the SP-34 tri-pedal unit connects directly to the CDP-S360 and provides all three pedal functions. With the SP-34 fitted, the CDP-S360 meets AMEB digital piano requirements for examinations.

Dynamic Stereo Sound Engine — 700 Tones and 128 Polyphony

The CDP-S360 uses Casio's Dynamic Stereo Sound Engine — a new generation sound system that produces a fuller, more resonant piano tone than previous CDP series instruments. The stereo-sampled piano tones provide the natural spread and depth of sound that a mono sample cannot replicate — notes have dimension and the tone changes naturally as you move across the keyboard.

128-note polyphony is the maximum number of notes the instrument can produce simultaneously. This matters for piano playing more than most players realise. When using the sustain pedal, previously played notes continue sounding while new notes are added. Complex repertoire — arpeggiated left hand patterns, sustained chords with moving melodic lines — can easily use 50, 60 or more simultaneous voices. At 64-note polyphony notes begin dropping out in complex passages. At 128-note polyphony the CDP-S360 handles the most demanding student repertoire without compromise.

The 200 built-in rhythms cover everything from classical waltz to contemporary pop, rock, jazz and world music styles — each with One Touch Preset that automatically selects appropriate tones and settings for that style. For students exploring composition, arranging and playing by ear, the rhythm section provides an instant backing band.

The built-in lesson function guides students through practice with feedback — a useful supplement to formal lessons for maintaining practice structure and technique development between teacher sessions. The 6-track recorder allows students to record and review their own playing — one of the most effective self-improvement tools available for developing musical awareness.
