D'Addario Lemon Oil – Natural Fretboard Cleaner & Conditioner
Keep your instrument playing like new with D'Addario Lemon Oil (SKU: PW-LMN). This natural cleaner and conditioner is expertly formulated to remove dirt, grease, and wax build-up from unfinished woods. Beyond cleaning, it acts as a deep conditioner, hydrating the timber to resist dryness and prevent the structural cracks that can shorten the life of your instrument.
The Angkor Music Bench-Tested Standard
In our Melbourne repair workshop, the most common issue we see with guitars is "fret sprout"—where a dry fretboard shrinks, leaving sharp metal ends sticking out. This is entirely preventable. We use D'Addario Lemon Oil during our professional setups to replenish the natural oils in Rosewood, Ebony, and Pau Ferro boards. It doesn't just make the wood look dark and rich; it creates a protective barrier against the humidity fluctuations we experience in Australia. If your fretboard looks "grey" or "ashy," it is overdue for a treatment.
Essential Care for All String Instruments
1. Deep Grime Removal
Easily cuts through the "gunk" left behind by sweat and skin oils. It lifts grease and wax build-up, leaving your fretboard feeling fast, smooth, and revitalized.
2. Hydration & Protection
Contains hydrating emollients that penetrate deep into the pores of unfinished wood. This conditioning helps the timber resist dryness and prevents costly structural damage.
3. Universal for Unfinished Woods
While optimized for guitar fretboards, this formula is safe and highly recommended for the unfinished wooden components of violins, cellos, and basses.
4. Easy Application
The simple liquid formula allows for precise application. A small amount goes a long way in restoring the luster and health of your instrument's most sensitive wooden parts.
Angkor Music Workshop Tip
Apply Lemon Oil during every string change. Use a lint-free cloth to rub a small amount into the wood, let it sit for 2-3 minutes, and then buff off the excess completely. Never use lemon oil on finished (glossy) maple fretboards—this is strictly for dark, porous woods like Rosewood or Ebony.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this on my Maple fretboard?
If your Maple fretboard has a glossy lacquer finish (common on Fender Strats and Teles), you should not use Lemon Oil. Instead, use a standard guitar polish. Lemon Oil is only for "open-pore" unfinished woods that need to absorb moisture.
How often should I condition my fretboard?
For most players in Australia, conditioning 2 to 4 times a year is sufficient. Over-hydrating can soften the wood too much, so it is best to apply it only when the wood looks dry or when you notice grime build-up during a string change.
Does this oil contain real lemons?
"Lemon Oil" in the context of guitar care is a mineral oil-based cleaner with lemon extracts for scent and cleaning power. It is specifically balanced for instrument timber and is much safer than household cleaning products which may contain harsh chemicals.
