Complete Drum Tuning & Dampening Pack — Tunebot Studio, Evans Torque Key & Evans EQ Pods

The Complete Drum Tuning & Dampening Pack takes the two-tool drum tuning system one essential step further — adding Evans EQ Pods gel dampeners to create a complete solution for both tuning and tone control. Tune accurately with the Tunebot Studio. Apply tension consistently with the Evans Torque Key. Shape the final sound with EQ Pods. These three tools together cover every stage of the process between fresh heads and a great sounding kit.

Angkor Music — Tuning, Tension and Tone Control

A properly tuned drum still has overtones — some musical and desirable, some not. EQ Pods give you the ability to selectively reduce the overtones that don't serve your sound without deadening the drum entirely the way a full dampening ring does. At Angkor Music we recommend this three-tool combination to drummers who want complete control over their drum sound from the ground up. Tune the fundamental with the Tunebot. Lock in the tension with the Torque Key. Sculpt the overtone profile with EQ Pods. In that order — every time.

What Is Included in This Pack

Tunebot Studio — Digital Drum Tuner

The Tunebot Studio from Overtone Labs clips directly onto the drum hoop and measures the frequency produced at each individual lug — displaying the result in both Hz and note name. It is the most precise and widely used digital drum tuner available and transforms drum tuning from a subjective, ear-dependent process into an objective, measurable one.

  • Frequency Measurement in Hz and Note Name: The most accurate way to achieve even lug tension and a clean drum fundamental.
  • Four-Colour Display with Virtual Tuning Needle: Clear, readable display that shows precisely how flat or sharp each lug is from your target frequency.
  • Standard and High Pitch Ranges: Covers the full range from deep bass drums to high-pitched snare drums — the entire kit in one device.
  • Kit Memory — 5 Kits, 10 Drums Each: Save and recall tuning settings for up to 50 individual drums. Return to your favourite sound instantly every time you change heads or play on an unfamiliar kit.
  • Higher Frequency Range Than Original Tunebot: More reliable readings on snare drums and high-pitched instruments where earlier models struggled.
  • Streamlined Keypad: Fast, intuitive operation — minimal time navigating menus, maximum time tuning.

Evans Torque Key — Precision Drum Tuning Key

The Evans Torque Key addresses the physical side of drum tuning — applying tension accurately and consistently across every lug. A standard drum key gives no feedback about tension — the Evans Torque Key features a torque-limiting mechanism that can be preset to a desired tension level. Once reached it simply stops, preventing over-tightening and ensuring every lug receives exactly the same tension.

  • Torque Handle with Tension Preset: Set your target tension and the key stops there — every lug, every drum, every time.
  • Magnetic Head: Slip-resistant magnetic head stays on the lug rod — faster tuning, less frustration.
  • Knurled Knob for Quick Spinning: Fast initial tightening before the torque mechanism engages.
  • Ergonomic Grip: Comfortable for extended tuning sessions across a full kit.
  • Co-designed with Ned Steinberger: Engineering precision applied to what most drummers regard as a simple tool.

Evans EQ Pods — Gel Drum Dampeners (7 Pods in Travel Case)

The Evans EQ Pods are gel-based drum dampeners designed to reduce unwanted overtones and ring without eliminating the natural resonance and sustain of a properly tuned drum. Each pack contains 7 individual gel pods in a convenient travel case — enough to cover your full kit with pods remaining for experimentation.

EQ Pods address a specific and important tonal challenge. A perfectly tuned drum still produces overtones — some are musical and contribute to the character of the drum, others are unwanted ring or boxy resonances that clutter a mix or sound unfocused in a room. Traditional dampening solutions — foam rings, heavy tape, full dampening rings — work by mass-damping the head, which removes overtones but also kills sustain, warmth and the natural dynamic response of the drum. EQ Pods take a surgical approach instead.

  • Gel Construction: The self-adhesive gel bonds lightly to the drumhead without leaving residue — it can be repositioned repeatedly to find the optimal placement for each drum.
  • Surgical Dampening: Placed at the edge of the head, EQ Pods selectively reduce high-frequency overtones and ring while leaving the fundamental tone, sustain and warmth of the drum largely intact. The drum still breathes — it just breathes more cleanly.
  • Adjustable Effect: The amount of dampening is controlled by the placement of the pod — closer to the edge for minimal effect, further toward the centre for more. Start subtle and adjust until the drum sounds right in your room or mix.
  • 7 Pods in Travel Case: Seven individual pods with a compact travel case — use one or two on a tom, one on a snare, multiple on a bass drum batter head, and keep the remainder for future use or experimentation. The travel case keeps them clean and prevents them drying out between uses.
  • Reusable and Residue-Free: The gel can be cleaned and reused multiple times. Remove, rinse, reapply. No sticky residue left on your heads.

The Complete Process — Tuning, Tension and Tone

These three tools work in sequence to take a drum from bare head to performance-ready sound:

  1. Fit new heads and finger-tighten all lugs evenly
  2. Use the Evans Torque Key set to a light initial tension to bring all lugs to a consistent starting point
  3. Clip the Tunebot Studio to the hoop and strike near each lug to read the current frequency
  4. Identify which lugs are high or low relative to your target frequency
  5. Use the Torque Key to make precise, controlled adjustments — same tension limit every turn
  6. Work around the drum until all lugs read the same target frequency on the Tunebot
  7. Save the target frequency to the Tunebot's kit memory for instant recall
  8. Apply EQ Pods at the edge of the head to reduce any remaining overtones or ring to taste
  9. Adjust pod placement until the drum sounds right in your room or mix

A drummer who follows this process consistently will have a kit that sounds noticeably better than the same kit tuned casually — in the room, in a recording and in a live mix.

Who This Pack Is For

  • Recording drummers — a properly tuned and dampened kit is the foundation of a great drum recording. No amount of processing compensates for poor tuning or unwanted ring in the source.
  • Live drummers — control your sound in different rooms and on different stages without changing your heads or setup.
  • Drummers upgrading their sound — before buying a new kit, exhaust the potential of the kit you have with proper tuning and tone control.
  • Drummers who change heads regularly — save your target frequencies and return to your sound in minutes with the Tunebot's kit memory.
  • Drum teachers — demonstrate correct tuning and dampening technique to students with objective, measurable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why add EQ Pods to the tuning pack?
Tuning the drum accurately sets the fundamental pitch and gives you even tension around the head. EQ Pods address what happens after that — the overtones and ring that remain even on a perfectly tuned drum. Some overtones are desirable and musical. Others are boxy, harsh or unfocused in a mix. EQ Pods let you selectively reduce the unwanted ones without killing the sustain and warmth of the drum the way full dampening rings or heavy tape does. Tuning and dampening are both part of the same process of shaping a drum sound — this pack covers both.

How are EQ Pods different from Moongel or tape?
All three reduce overtones but they work differently and have different tonal outcomes. Tape is permanent and affects a large surface area — effective but inflexible. Moongel is heavier and tends to produce a more significant dampening effect. EQ Pods are lighter, more precisely placeable and produce a subtler, more surgical result — less ring without significantly reducing sustain or warmth. They are also cleaner to handle and store than loose Moongel, which can dry out or attract debris. For drummers who want subtle control rather than heavy dampening, EQ Pods are the more precise tool.

How many EQ Pods do I need per drum?
Typically one pod is sufficient for a tom or snare — placed at the edge of the batter head. Bass drum batter heads may benefit from two to three pods depending on the amount of dampening desired. The seven pods in this pack are enough to cover a standard four or five piece kit with room to spare. Start with one pod per drum and adjust the placement and quantity to taste.

Where exactly do I place the EQ Pods?
Place the pod at the edge of the drumhead, approximately one to two centimetres from the hoop, at any point around the circumference. Placing closer to the edge has a more subtle effect. Moving toward the centre increases the dampening. Experiment with placement until the drum sounds right in your specific room — what works in a rehearsal studio may need adjusting in a recording environment or on stage.

Can the EQ Pods be reused?
Yes. The gel can be removed from the head without leaving residue, rinsed clean with water, and reapplied. The travel case in this pack keeps the pods clean and prevents them from drying out between uses. With reasonable care a set of EQ Pods can be used across multiple head changes.

Is the Tunebot Studio suitable for beginners?
Yes — it is arguably more valuable for beginners because it removes the need for a developed ear. A beginner can achieve accurate, consistent tuning from day one by measuring and matching frequencies rather than relying on subjective listening. The four-colour display and intuitive layout make it easy to use without a lengthy learning curve.

Does the Evans Torque Key work on all drum brands?
Yes. The Evans Torque Key uses a standard drum key head that fits all conventional drum kit tuning rods. It is compatible with Pearl, PDP, Gretsch, DW, Ludwig, Mapex and all other major drum brands.

What drumheads do you recommend to complete this setup?
We stock the full Evans drumhead range at Angkor Music — from coated and clear single-ply heads for open, resonant tones to two-ply and hydraulic heads for more controlled, focused sounds. The right head choice depends on your playing style, genre and preferred sound. Our team is happy to advise — visit us at 4 Drake Boulevard, Altona or contact us before purchasing.
