Gliga I — The Finest Timber, The Most Experienced Hands
In the Gliga workshop, it is only the most experienced builders who work with the higher grades of wood selected for Gliga I instruments. These expert craftspeople draw on decades of knowledge as they graduate the plates with precision and artfully tune them — producing fine violins of genuine acoustic character at full size.
- Fine Straight Grain Spruce Top: The finest straight-grained spruce selected for Gliga I instruments. The sound continues to open up the more the instrument is played — becoming richer and more responsive over years of regular use. This is an instrument that deserves to be played often and well.
- Striking Flamed Maple Back, Neck and Sides: The book-matched flamed maple back exhibits striking flame matched to the solid maple ribs — dense, consistent wood structure contributing to sustain, projection and tonal warmth across the full range of the instrument.
- Hand Applied Oil Varnish: The traditional oil varnish is carefully applied by hand so as not to hinder the instrument acoustically — allowing the wood to vibrate freely and develop its natural resonance over years of playing. Traditional hand-applied oil varnish is widely regarded by violin makers as acoustically superior to modern synthetic alternatives because it does not impede the natural resonance of the plates.
- Inlaid Purfling: Meticulously inlaid by hand — not painted — protecting the instrument structurally and adding to its refined appearance.
- Stradivari Pattern: Built to the proportions of the world's most celebrated violin design at full 4/4 size.
Quality Fittings Throughout
- Ebony Swiss-style Pegs: Precisely adjusted for smooth, reliable tuning.
- Ebony Fingerboard: Genuine ebony for long-lasting durability and a professional feel under the fingers.
- Ebony Teka Chinrest: Comfortable and elegantly finished.
- Wittner Ultralight Tailpiece with Built-in Adjusters: Chosen for its light weight, stability and ease of precise tuning — all four strings have built-in fine tuners, making small tuning adjustments straightforward for students and their parents.
- Maple Bridge: Correctly fitted in our workshop. Your luthier may recommend upgrading to a European aged maple bridge depending on your requirements and the instrument's development.
Opal Gold Strings — Easy Playability and Expressive Range
Opal Gold strings are fitted as standard — selected for their easy playability and expressive tonal range. For an advancing student developing technique and tonal awareness, the Opal Gold provides a responsive, musical foundation. As the instrument opens up with playing and the student progresses, your teacher may recommend upgrading to Pirastro Violino, Pirastro Obligato, Evah Pirazzi or Jargar Superior strings depending on your tonal goals and playing style.
Premium Outfit
Articul Carbon Fibre Bow with Ebony Frog and Horsehair
The Articul carbon fibre bow is a premium bow offering exceptional consistency of flex and response — durable, reliable across a wide range of conditions and a bow worthy of this instrument. Carbon fibre bows at this level provide a consistency that brazilwood bows of equivalent price cannot match — the material does not respond to humidity and temperature changes, maintaining the same playing characteristics in a hot concert hall as in a cold rehearsal room.
HQ Half Moon Case
The HQ Half Moon case is a distinctive and well-constructed violin case that combines practical protection with a striking visual profile. The half-moon shape — a rounded, curved silhouette rather than the rectangular oblong — is lighter than a standard oblong case for its protective capability, sits comfortably on the back when carried by its shoulder straps and has a refined aesthetic that stands apart from standard student cases.
The HQ brand is well regarded in the Australian violin market for quality construction and reliable protection — the interior is shaped to securely hold the violin and bow, with adequate space for accessories. For a student who carries their instrument to school, lessons and rehearsals regularly, the combination of light weight, good protection and comfortable carry makes the Half Moon an excellent choice.

Understanding Handmade Violin Craftsmanship
A handmade violin is not a factory-produced instrument turned out by computer-controlled machines to identical tolerances. It is a hand-built wooden instrument crafted by individual makers using traditional techniques that have changed little in centuries — and that is precisely what makes it special.
Gliga I instruments are built by the most experienced makers in the workshop. Each instrument is individual. Minor cosmetic variations are not defects — they are the hallmark of authentic handcraft and entirely normal and expected. Here is what you may notice:
Varnish and Finish
The hand-applied oil varnish may have small surface variations — minor bumps, pits or areas of slightly uneven thickness. These are inherent to the hand-application process and characteristic of traditional violin making. They do not affect the acoustic performance of the instrument — in fact the hand-applied varnish is part of what allows the wood to vibrate freely and develop its voice over time.
Corners, Edges and Scroll
Handmade instruments may have slightly thicker or more rounded corners and edges than the refined finishes of high-end Italian instruments. The scroll is hand-carved and unique to each instrument. These are characteristics of traditional handcraft, not flaws.
These minor cosmetic characteristics do not affect playability, tone or structural integrity in any way. If you have any questions about a specific instrument, you are welcome to contact us or visit our Altona workshop at 4 Drake Boulevard before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What level of student is the Gliga I 4/4 designed for?
The Gliga I is designed for the advancing student who has progressed well beyond their entry level instrument and is ready for a violin that responds to developing technique with a richer, more complex and more expressive sound. At 4/4 this typically means a student aged approximately 11 and above who has been playing for two or more years and whose teacher has recommended a meaningful upgrade. This is an instrument that will reward serious, regular playing and grow with the student over many years.
How does the Gliga I differ from the Gliga II and Gliga III?
The Gliga III is the entry level — quality solid wood construction and reliable playability. The Gliga II represents a step up in timber grading and craftsmanship — tighter grain spruce, more pronounced maple flame and more experienced makers. The Gliga I goes further still — the finest grades of timber in the Gliga range, worked exclusively by the most experienced makers with the greatest precision in plate graduation and tuning. The difference in acoustic character between a Gliga I and a Gliga III is immediately audible to any experienced player or teacher. The Gliga I also includes the Articul carbon fibre bow and HQ Half Moon case rather than the brazilwood bow and dart case of the lower tiers.
What are Opal Gold strings and are they suitable for an advancing student?
Opal Gold strings are a quality student synthetic string selected for their easy playability and expressive tonal range — a solid foundation for the advancing student that is noticeably more musical than basic steel strings. As the instrument opens up and the player develops, your teacher may recommend upgrading to Pirastro Violino, Obligato, Evah Pirazzi or Jargar Superior for a more nuanced tonal palette. All string upgrades are available at Angkor Music.
What does it mean that the spruce will open up with playing?
Fine straight grain spruce continues to respond to vibration over time. Regular playing causes the wood fibres to align and resonate more efficiently, producing a gradually richer and more complex tonal character. A Gliga I played regularly for several years will sound noticeably better than it did when new — making it a genuine long-term investment for the serious student.
What is the HQ Half Moon case and how does it compare to an oblong case?
The HQ Half Moon case has a distinctive curved, rounded profile rather than the rectangular shape of a standard oblong case. The half-moon format is typically lighter than an oblong case of equivalent protection, sits more comfortably on the back when carried by shoulder straps and has a refined aesthetic character. The HQ brand is well regarded in the Australian violin market for reliable construction and good interior protection. For a student who carries their instrument regularly, the Half Moon's combination of lighter weight and comfortable carry is a practical advantage.
Why might my luthier recommend upgrading the bridge?
The maple bridge fitted as standard is correctly installed and functional. As the instrument develops its voice over time — particularly after string upgrades — a luthier may recommend upgrading to a European aged maple bridge such as an Aubert to maximise the acoustic potential of the instrument. This is a workshop service available at Angkor Music and is one of the most cost-effective acoustic upgrades for any violin.
Can I try this violin in person before purchasing?
Yes. You are welcome to visit our Altona workshop at 4 Drake Boulevard. We strongly recommend trying the Gliga I alongside the Gliga II and III in person — the difference in tonal character and response is immediately apparent and confirms the upgrade decision clearly for both students and parents.
