Rico by D’Addario Alto Saxophone Reeds – Strength 1.5 (10-Pack)
Rico by D’Addario reeds are the world's most popular choice for beginning saxophonists. Specifically engineered for a fast response and effortless playability, these reeds help new students overcome the initial challenges of tone production. Produced by D'Addario in the USA, the Rico series combines high-quality natural cane with precision manufacturing to ensure that every reed in the box is ready to perform.
The Standard for Success
The RJA1015 features a thinner profile and an unfiled cut, which is a mechanical necessity for younger players with developing embouchures. By reducing the physical effort required to vibrate the reed, the 1.5 Strength allows students to focus on fingerings and rhythm rather than struggling to make a sound. This makes it the most highly recommended strength for a student's very first lesson.
Consistency for Educators
D'Addario's digital reed-making technology provides a level of consistency that parents and music teachers rely on. This 10-pack ensures that students have a reliable supply of reeds that play identically, reducing the frustration of "dud" reeds often found in lower-quality brands.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1.5 the right strength for a total beginner?
Yes. Most teachers recommend a 1.5 strength for the first few months of playing. It is soft enough to vibrate easily while the student builds up their mouth muscles (embouchure).
How often should a student change their reed?
A reed should be changed if it becomes chipped, dark/discoloured, or if it feels too "mushy" and difficult to play. On average, a student playing daily will go through a reed every 1–2 weeks.
Do these reeds need to be wet before playing?
Yes. For the best sound and longevity, moisten the reed in your mouth for about a minute before attaching it to the mouthpiece. This ensures the cane fibres are flexible and ready to vibrate.
