Schecter Hellraiser C-1 FR S Electric Guitar — EMG 81 & Sustainiac — Black Cherry

Please note: The Sustainiac sustainer system and EMG 81 bridge pickup are both active electronics — this guitar requires two 9-volt batteries (not included). Batteries are accessed through the double clip-in compartment on the rear of the body.

The Schecter Hellraiser C-1 FR S is Schecter's flagship high-gain guitar, combining a Mahogany body with an arched Quilted Maple top, a set-neck construction with Ultra Access, and an electronics package that goes well beyond what any single passive pickup guitar can deliver. The bridge is the EMG 81 — the defining active humbucker of metal for four decades. The neck position is a Sustainiac sustainer/driver, providing infinite sustain and controllable harmonic feedback across three modes. Both are active electronics, both require a 9V battery, and both are loaded into the one instrument. Add a Floyd Rose 1000 double-locking tremolo and 24 X-Jumbo frets on a rosewood fretboard, and the Hellraiser C-1 FR S is a thoroughly specified professional instrument built and assembled in South Korea.

★ Expert Insight — Two Active Systems, Five Controls, One Guitar

Most guitars with a Sustainiac use a passive bridge pickup alongside it. The Hellraiser C-1 FR S pairs the Sustainiac with an EMG 81 — meaning both electronics are active and each draws from its own 9V battery in a dual compartment. The EMG 81 delivers a tight, high-output, low-noise active signal ideal for saturated high-gain tones. The Sustainiac sits in the neck position and uses its own circuit to electromagnetically drive the strings into infinite sustain.

The control layout reflects this complexity: Volume, Tone, an Intensity knob (Sustainiac drive level), a standard 3-way pickup selector, a 2-way Sustainiac On/Off switch, and a 3-way Sustainiac Mode switch (Fundamental / Mix / Harmonic). The Intensity knob is not present on all Sustainiac-equipped guitars — it allows you to dial in how aggressively the driver pushes the strings, from subtle extension of natural sustain to full-on infinite sustain.

When the Sustainiac is active, use the pickup selector in bridge or middle position — the neck position is functioning as a driver, not a pickup, and the EMG 81 at the bridge is your audio source.

EMG 81 — Active Bridge Humbucker

The EMG 81 is an active humbucker with an internal preamp powered by a 9V battery. Unlike passive humbuckers, which rely entirely on coil wire and magnet to generate output, an active pickup passes the coil's signal through an onboard buffer and preamp circuit before it reaches the output jack. The result is a high-output, low-impedance signal with very low noise, excellent clarity under heavy gain, and tight, controlled low frequencies that do not become muddy as distortion increases.

The EMG 81 uses ceramic magnets and was designed explicitly for bridge-position, high-gain use. Its characteristic tonal signature — compressed attack, scooped low-mids, articulate highs — has defined the lead and rhythm sound of hard rock and metal for decades, and the guitar's mahogany body provides the warmth and sustain that the pickup's scooped mid-range leaves room for. The two tones complement rather than duplicate each other.

Because the EMG 81 is active, it needs its own 9V battery. This is independent of the Sustainiac's battery. The Hellraiser C-1 FR S has a double 9V clip-in compartment specifically to accommodate both. Keep a spare of each when performing live.

Sustainiac Sustainer — Three Modes and the Intensity Control

The Sustainiac Stealth Pro is installed in the neck pickup position. It uses an electromagnetic coil to continuously excite the strings at the frequency they are already vibrating at, maintaining that vibration indefinitely without decay. This is not reverb, not delay, not a compressor — it is active string excitation. The note sustains for as long as you hold it and as long as the Sustainiac is switched on.

Fundamental Mode — Reinforces the fundamental pitch of the note being played. Clean, transparent sustain with no harmonic colouration. The starting point for lead lines that need to sing indefinitely at pitch.

Mix Mode — Blends fundamental sustain with harmonic overtone generation. The sustained note develops texture and movement as the harmonic content rises, adding complexity to long, held notes without the intensity of full Harmonic mode.

Harmonic Mode — Generates upper harmonics rather than the fundamental, producing the sound of infinite, controlled feedback. Octave harmonics, fifths and other overtones are accessible by adjusting picking position and fret-hand pressure. This mode produces harmonic screams and feedback textures at any volume — the signature capability of the Sustainiac system.

The Intensity knob on the Hellraiser C-1 FR S controls how strongly the driver circuit pushes the strings. At lower Intensity settings, the sustainer gently extends the natural decay of the string — the note takes longer to die away but does not sustain indefinitely. At higher settings, the driver overcomes string losses and the note sustains without end. This allows for a range of sustain behaviour that is not present on guitars where the Sustainiac circuit does not expose the drive level as a user control.

Mahogany Body, Quilted Maple Top — Tonewood Character and Visual Identity

The Hellraiser C-1 FR S uses a Mahogany body. Mahogany is a tonewood associated with warmth, strong midrange presence and generous natural sustain — the combination of its density and moderate weight produces the full, slightly dark tone characteristic of Les Paul-style guitars. In the context of a high-gain instrument, mahogany's midrange body counterbalances the EMG 81's scooped character, producing a combined sound that is aggressive but not thin.

The body is topped with a Quilted Maple cap shaped into an arched contour — the top curves upward from the edges toward the centre, similar in principle to a Les Paul's carved top. Quilted Maple is figured maple showing a three-dimensional rippling or bubbling pattern in the grain that catches light differently at every angle. In Black Cherry, this figuring reads as a deep, translucent red with dark accents, and the abalone binding along the body edges and the BLK/WHT/BLK multi-ply binding layer beneath it frame the top precisely.

This is a guitar whose visual design is part of its identity. The Gothic Cross inlays on the fretboard, the abalone binding, the arched quilted top in Black Cherry — the Hellraiser series has a specific aesthetic that distinguishes it immediately, and the C-1 FR S is its most fully specified expression.

3-Piece Mahogany Neck, Rosewood Fretboard, 24 X-Jumbo Frets

The neck is a 3-piece Mahogany construction. Multi-piece necks are used to improve stability — grain direction alternates between each laminated section, which reduces the tendency to warp or twist that can occur in single-piece necks exposed to humidity changes. Mahogany necks have a warmer, softer tone than maple, complementing the mahogany body's character in the upper register. The profile is a Thin C shape, measuring 20mm at the first fret and 22mm at the twelfth — slightly thicker than the Reaper-6 FR S but still a contemporary C profile suited to fast playing.

The rosewood fretboard has a warmer, denser feel than maple and a slightly more open texture than ebony. It produces a rounded, slightly softer attack compared to ebony — the upper harmonics are present but less emphasised, which pairs well with the EMG 81's already articulate high-end character. The 14-inch (355mm) radius is flat by modern standards, minimising fretting-out on bends even with X-Jumbo frets on a 24-fret guitar.

The 24 X-Jumbo frets provide full upper-register access, and the tall fret wire reduces the effort required to fret cleanly when bending. The Gothic Cross inlays at the standard fret positions are made from abalone shell — the same material used in the body binding — giving the fretboard a cohesive visual theme that runs across the entire instrument.

Grover tuning machines are fitted at the headstock. Grover is a well-established American tuner brand; their machines are fitted to a wide range of professional instruments and are known for smooth, consistent operation and good tuning ratio precision.

Set-Neck with Ultra Access — Construction and Upper Fret Feel

The Hellraiser C-1 FR S uses set-neck construction — the neck is glued into the body pocket rather than bolted on. Set-neck construction increases the wood contact area between neck and body compared to a bolt-on joint, which contributes to the guitar's natural sustain and tonal coupling. The heel joint is contoured with Schecter's Ultra Access carve — the body is sculpted at the upper bout so that the fretting hand can reach the 24th fret without the thumb catching the top edge of the body. On a 24-fret guitar, upper fret access is directly relevant to how the instrument plays in practice, not a cosmetic specification.

Floyd Rose 1000 Series — Double-Locking Tremolo

The Floyd Rose 1000 Series is a step above the 1500 Series in the Floyd Rose product range, using higher-grade materials and a heavier block. The double-locking mechanism is identical across both series: strings are clamped at the bridge saddle and at the locking nut, preventing any movement regardless of how extensively the tremolo arm is used. This allows full-range tremolo technique — arm-up pitch raises, full-depth dive bombs, flutter effects — without the guitar going out of tune between uses.

Fine tuners on the bridge body allow small tuning adjustments without unlocking, covering the minor pitch drift that can occur from temperature changes on stage. String changes require loosening the locking nut and saddle lock screws, which takes longer than a conventional bridge but becomes routine with practice. All Floyd Rose 1000 Series components are interchangeable with Floyd Rose Original parts — the bridge block, saddles, spring claw, tremolo arm and springs can all be upgraded to Original specification using standard Floyd Rose parts.

Who Is the Hellraiser C-1 FR S For?

The Hellraiser C-1 FR S is for players who want a professional-grade, high-gain instrument with a complete active electronics package assembled in South Korea. The EMG 81 and Sustainiac combination is rare on production guitars at this price point — the Hellraiser series has offered this specification for years precisely because the demand exists among serious lead guitarists working in metal, progressive rock and high-gain experimental styles.

The Intensity control makes the Sustainiac more flexible than many Sustainiac-equipped guitars, allowing subtle sustain extension as well as infinite sustain and harmonic feedback. Players who work across a range of dynamics — from clean or crunch tones (Sustainiac off, EMG 81 direct) to high-gain lead (EMG 81 with Floyd Rose) to expressive, ambient sustain (Sustainiac in Harmonic mode) — will find the Hellraiser C-1 FR S covers more ground than most guitars with two pickups and a tremolo.

There is genuine complexity here. Two batteries, a Floyd Rose, and a five-control layout require familiarity to use fluently. The payoff is a guitar that can do things other instruments cannot, and that is specified to a standard that rewards serious players.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this guitar need two 9V batteries?

Because it has two independent active electronics systems: the EMG 81 bridge pickup has its own internal preamp circuit that requires a 9V battery, and the Sustainiac sustainer system also has its own active circuit that requires a separate 9V battery. The two systems draw from their own power sources and each has its own battery clip in the double compartment on the rear of the guitar. Replace them independently — when one goes flat, only that system will stop working. Keep both topped up before any live performance, and unplug the guitar when not in use to prevent battery drain through the output jack contact.

What does the Intensity knob control?

The Intensity knob adjusts how strongly the Sustainiac driver circuit excites the strings. At low Intensity settings, the system gently extends the string's natural decay — the note sustains longer than it would unpowered but does not sustain indefinitely. As Intensity increases, the driver overcomes the string's natural loss and the note sustains without end. At high Intensity settings in Harmonic mode, the Sustainiac produces its characteristic harmonic feedback effects more readily. This control makes the Hellraiser C-1 FR S more flexible in sustain application than Sustainiac-equipped guitars that do not expose the drive level as a dial.

Can I use the neck pickup for clean tones when the Sustainiac is off?

Yes. When the Sustainiac On/Off switch is in the OFF position, the driver coil in the neck position functions as a conventional electromagnetic pickup and produces a standard neck pickup tone through the signal chain. In this mode the guitar is essentially an EMG 81 (bridge) and a passive-voiced neck driver coil, and the pickup selector works normally. The Sustainiac-off neck tone will be warmer and less aggressive than the EMG 81, making the two positions genuinely different voices for the one guitar.

Is the Floyd Rose 1000 better than the Floyd Rose 1500?

Yes — the 1000 Series sits above the 1500 Series in the Floyd Rose product line. Both are genuine Floyd Rose manufactured bridges using the same double-locking mechanism, but the 1000 Series uses higher-grade materials, a heavier steel block (which contributes to sustain and tone), and a more refined finish. The functional difference between them in daily use is small, but the 1000 Series is the closer specification to the Floyd Rose Original. All parts are interchangeable across the 1000, 1500 and Original series, so both can be upgraded using standard Floyd Rose components.

What is the difference between this and the Schecter Reaper-6 FR S?

The Hellraiser C-1 FR S and the Reaper-6 FR S share the Sustainiac system and Floyd Rose bridge but differ substantially in tonal character and specification. The Hellraiser uses Mahogany body and neck with a Quilted Maple arched top, a rosewood fretboard, an EMG 81 active bridge pickup and a Floyd Rose 1000 — and is made in South Korea. The Reaper-6 FR S uses a Swamp Ash body with a Burl top, an ebony fretboard, the passive Schecter Diamond Decimator at the bridge and a Floyd Rose 1500 — and is made in Indonesia. The Hellraiser is warmer and heavier-voiced with more complex active electronics (two batteries, Intensity control); the Reaper-6 FR S is brighter and more articulate with a passive bridge pickup and a simpler control layout. Both sustain indefinitely through the Sustainiac — the tonal character of that sustain differs because the bridge pickup feeding your amplifier differs.
