Vandoren V5 T15 Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece (SM421)
The Vandoren V5 T15 is engineered for the tenor saxophonist who prioritizes control, precision, and a refined tonal palette. As a standout in the V5 Series, the T15 is celebrated for being exceptionally easy blowing, making it an ideal choice for classical soloists, concert band performers, and advancing students who require a reliable, high-quality ebonite mouthpiece.
Angkor Music Performance Insight
The T15 is often the preferred "first professional" tenor mouthpiece we recommend at Angkor Music. Its 176 tip opening is conservative enough to allow for incredible stability, yet it provides a rich, warm resonance that stock mouthpieces simply cannot match. The medium-short facing is the secret to its legendary articulation—staccato passages speak with immediate clarity, and the transition between registers feels seamless. It is a sophisticated tool that allows the player to focus on musicality rather than fighting the instrument.
Exceptional Control & Clarity
The V5 series is designed to offer a traditional round chamber that favors a pure, focused sound.
- Easy Articulation: The precise rail design and medium-short facing allow for effortless tonguing and crisp note starts, essential for technical classical repertoire.
- Focused Tonal Core: The T15 produces a sound that is dark and centered, blending beautifully within a saxophone section or with orchestral strings.
- Intonation Stability: Known for its consistent pitching across the entire range of the tenor, helping players maintain a perfect center without excessive embouchure adjustment.
Classic Ebonite Craftsmanship
Vandoren’s commitment to quality ensures that every SM421 mouthpiece is a long-term investment for the serious performer.
- High-Quality Vulcanized Rubber: Crafted from premium ebonite for a warm, organic resonance and superior durability.
- Traditional Round Chamber: Unlike "stepped" jazz baffles, the round chamber of the V5 series ensures a smooth, non-aggressive sound profile.
- Professional Finish: Every mouthpiece is finished with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring the table is perfectly flat for an airtight reed seal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the T15 suitable for jazz?
While it can be used for any style, the T15 is primarily a classical and concert mouthpiece. It lacks the "bright" baffle found in jazz models, focusing instead on a pure, dark, and round tone.
What reed strength works best with the T15?
Because of the 176 opening, it pairs very well with slightly firmer reeds. We recommend Vandoren Traditional (Blue Box) 2.5 to 3.5, or V12/V21 reeds in strengths 3 to 4 for a professional classical setup.
How does this compare to the Optimum series?
The V5 T15 has a more traditional "vintage" classical feel compared to the Optimum series, which features a more modern ergonomic exterior and a slightly different internal taper.
