K&K Sound Pure Resonator BB — Biscuit Bridge Passive Pickup
The K&K Sound Pure Resonator BB is a passive pickup designed specifically for biscuit bridge resonator guitars — the single-cone National, Regal, Recording King and similar style instruments. Featuring a screw-mounted design for maximum sound transmission and feedback resistance, pre-wired for external jack mounting with a 3M Dual-Lock fastening system, and updated in December 2017 for improved string-to-string balance. This is the definitive amplification solution for biscuit bridge resonator players who want natural, acoustic tone without active electronics.
Angkor Music — K&K Sound and the Resonator Pickup Question
K&K Sound is our primary recommendation for acoustic and resonator guitar pickup systems — German-engineered piezo technology that captures the natural acoustic character of the instrument without the coloured, compressed sound that many undersaddle pickups produce. The Pure Resonator BB is the correct K&K pickup for biscuit bridge resonator guitars — the single-cone style used by the majority of resonator players in blues, country and folk contexts. We stock the complete K&K range including preamps, so if you want to add active EQ and volume control to the passive Pure Resonator BB, we have the right preamp solution for your rig. Visit us at Altona to discuss your specific setup.
Biscuit Bridge vs Spider Bridge — The Critical Compatibility Question
Before purchasing a resonator pickup, it is essential to know which bridge type your guitar uses. The two resonator bridge designs are fundamentally different and require different pickup solutions.
| Bridge Type | Description | Typical Guitars | Correct Pickup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biscuit Bridge | Single cone — small round wooden saddle sits on top of a single resonator cone | National, Regal, Recording King, most entry and mid-level resonators | K&K Pure Resonator BB — this pickup |
| Spider Bridge | Tricone or dobro style — spider-shaped metal bridge sits across a single cone or three cones | Dobro, National Tricone, spider-bridge resonators and squareneck lap steels | K&K Pure Resonator — different model |
Confirm your bridge type before ordering: If you are unsure whether your resonator uses a biscuit bridge or a spider bridge, look inside the soundhole. A biscuit bridge will have a small round wooden or composite disc sitting on top of the resonator cone at the centre. A spider bridge will have a metal spider-shaped bracket spanning across the cone. Contact us before ordering if you are uncertain — fitting the wrong pickup for your bridge type will not produce correct results.
Screw-Mounted Design — Maximum Sound Transmission
The Pure Resonator BB uses a screw-mounted pickup design — the pickup element is secured directly to the biscuit saddle with a small screw, creating a direct mechanical connection between the pickup and the vibrating saddle. This direct coupling is the key to the Pure Resonator BB's natural, acoustic sound quality.
Many resonator pickup designs use adhesive or pressure contact with the cone or body — less invasive but also less acoustically coupled. The screw-mounted approach of the Pure Resonator BB captures the vibration of the saddle directly, reproducing the characteristic resonator tone — the metallic shimmer, the cone sustain and the complex harmonic content — more accurately than contact-mounted alternatives.
The screw mounting also contributes to the Pure Resonator BB's excellent feedback resistance — because the pickup is capturing saddle vibration rather than body vibration, it is significantly less prone to the feedback that plagues many resonator amplification solutions at stage volume.
Pre-Wired for External Jack — Dual-Lock Fastening System
The Pure Resonator BB arrives pre-wired and ready to install. The output jack is configured for external mounting using the 3M Dual-Lock fastening system — an industrial-strength hook-and-loop fastener that secures the jack to the outside of the guitar body without drilling or permanent modification. The Dual-Lock system is strong enough for stage use and removes cleanly without damaging the guitar's finish.
For players who prefer an internally mounted jack — a cleaner, more permanent installation — the Dual-Lock system can be removed and the jack installed inside the endpin or side of the guitar. Professional installation is required for internal jack mounting. Our workshop team at Angkor Music can perform this installation.
Passive — No Battery Required
The Pure Resonator BB is a passive pickup — it requires no battery and contains no onboard preamp. The passive design produces a natural, uncoloured signal that accurately reflects the acoustic character of the instrument without the compression, EQ colouring or tonal alteration that active onboard systems can introduce.
The passive output of the Pure Resonator BB is optimised for connection to:
- An acoustic amplifier with a high-impedance instrument input
- A DI box (passive or active) for connecting to a PA system or mixing desk
- A K&K Pure Preamp or similar acoustic preamp for volume control and EQ
For players who want volume control and basic EQ at the guitar, we recommend adding the K&K Pure Preamp — available separately at Angkor Music — which is specifically designed to complement K&K passive pickup systems.
2017 Update — Improved String-to-String Balance
The Pure Resonator BB was updated in December 2017 specifically to improve string-to-string balance — ensuring that all six strings are reproduced with consistent volume and tonal character rather than having some strings sound louder or brighter than others through the pickup. This refinement reflects K&K's ongoing commitment to optimising their pickup designs based on real-world player feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my resonator has a biscuit bridge or a spider bridge?
Look through the soundhole at the resonator cone. A biscuit bridge has a small round wooden or composite disc — the biscuit — sitting on top of the cone at its centre point, with the saddle on top of that. This is the standard bridge type on most National, Regal, Recording King and similar single-cone resonators. A spider bridge has a metal spider-shaped bracket that spans across the cone with the saddle sitting on the spider — found on Dobro-style resonators and National tricones. The Pure Resonator BB is for biscuit bridge guitars only. Contact us if you are unsure.
Is this pickup passive — does it need a battery?
The Pure Resonator BB is a passive pickup — no battery is required. It produces a natural, uncoloured signal directly from the piezo elements. For players who want volume control and EQ at the guitar, the K&K Pure Preamp is the recommended companion — available separately at Angkor Music.
Can I install the jack internally rather than using the Dual-Lock system?
Yes — the jack can be installed internally if the Dual-Lock fastening system is removed. Internal installation requires drilling through the endpin or side of the guitar and is a professional installation job. Our workshop team at Angkor Music can perform this installation. Contact us to discuss options and arrange a booking.
What preamp should I use with the Pure Resonator BB?
K&K's own Pure Preamp is the natural companion to the Pure Resonator BB — designed specifically to complement K&K passive pickup systems with clean amplification, volume control and basic EQ. We stock the K&K Pure Preamp and a range of other preamp solutions at Angkor Music. Contact us to discuss the best preamp for your specific amplification setup.
Will this pickup work with my PA system directly?
The passive output of the Pure Resonator BB is best suited to a high-impedance instrument input rather than a low-impedance microphone input on a PA desk. For direct connection to a PA system we recommend using an active DI box between the pickup and the PA input — or adding the K&K Pure Preamp which can drive a longer cable run to the mixing desk. Contact us if you have questions about your specific PA setup.
Can Angkor Music install this pickup for me?
Yes. Our workshop team can install the Pure Resonator BB on your biscuit bridge resonator guitar — including professional internal jack installation if preferred. Drop your guitar into our Altona workshop at 4 Drake Boulevard or use our mail-in service at angkormusic.com.au/guitar-repairs.
